While carat is the standard unit of measurement, the millimeter size measurement of a diamond tells you its true physical size. This is important when considering the faceting and shape because, as you can see in the diamond weight chart above, certain shapes will appear larger in size at equivalent carat weights.

A half carat diamond is usually 5.1mm in diameter. That is 1/5th of an inch. To compare that, a one carat diamond is 6.4mm. So while the one carat is double the weight, the face of the half carat diamond is only 21% smaller.

Let me illustrate by using the heart shaped diamond as an example…. In our charts, the dimensions of a 1 carat heart shaped diamond is indicated as 6.50mm x 6.50mm. This is based on a length to width ratio of 1:1. Most people ( including myself) prefer fatter looking stones with length to width ratios of around 0.90:1.

The left diamond is good cut and is 1.00 carat. It has a 6.2x6.3mm surface area. The right diamond is of excellent cut and weighs 0.92 carats with a surface area of 6.2x6.2mm. Despite the two diamonds having different sizes of carat, they all have the same surface area.

For the fog test, hold the diamond or ring between two fingers and breath on it with a puff of air. A light fog will form on the diamond because of the moisture and heat in your breath. If the fog dissipates right away, the diamond is real. If it takes several seconds for the fog to disperse, it is likely a fake diamond.
