Here is How to Tell if a Diamond is Real or Fake 1) Water Test. Use this simple test to ensure a diamond is real. Find a normal sized drinking glass and fill it ¾ of the way with water. Carefully drop the loose stone into the glass. If the gemstone sinks, it’s a real diamond.

The Fog Test To Determining If Your Diamond Is Real. A quick and easy way to tell if your diamond is real or not — put the stone in front of your mouth and fog it up with your breath. If it clears up after a second or two, then it's real, but if karat stays fogged for three seconds or more, then you're looking at a fake.

Myth: You can spot a real diamond by the quality and metal of its setting. Fact: While natural diamonds are often set in gold or platinum, the metal alone is not a definitive clue. Because of the high cost of gold and platinum, diamonds today are sometimes set in silver metal, too. Antique jewelry can contain diamonds set in a mix of gold and silver.

To quickly tell if your diamond is real, breathe on it to make it fog up. If the fog disperses right away, it’s a real diamond; if it stays fogged for a few seconds, it’s probably fake. If the diamond isn’t mounted on jewelry, set it on a piece of paper with writing. If the print is completely illegible, it’s real; if you can can read the print or make out some smudged lines, it’s fake. You can also check by dropping the stone in a glass of water.

If you’re holding a real diamond, you should be able to notice bright shimmers of white light bouncing off the diamond and colorful light reflections. The white light that is bouncing off is known as the diamond’s brilliance whereas the rainbow light that is reflected is called its fire.

If you want to know if your diamond is a real natural stone, you can do five tests at home. These can help distinguish between diamonds, cubic zirconia (CZ), and artificial diamonds such as moissanite. The last three tests work better if you have a loose stone. If the stone fails all five tests, your diamond is likely fake.

1. How to Tell if a Diamond Is Real With Fog. To tell if your diamond is real, place the stone in front of your mouth and, like a mirror, fog it up with your breath. If the stone stays fogged for a few seconds, then it's probably a fake. A real diamond won't fog up easily since the condensation doesn't stick to the surface. 2.

The first step to know is a diamond is real or not is to observe the possible diamond very carefully. Diamonds, as with many gemstones, have a particular shine. You must make sure that the reflections are a grayish color, though some color may also be visible. If so, it is more likely to be a real diamond than if the reflection shows more colors than the amount of grey and white.

For the fog test, hold the diamond or ring between two fingers and breath on it with a puff of air. A light fog will form on the diamond because of the moisture and heat in your breath. If the fog dissipates right away, the diamond is real. If it takes several seconds for the fog to disperse, it is likely a fake diamond.
