It's the quality of the cut that gives diamonds their fire, brilliance and scintillation, so choosing the very best Cut grade is a far better way to get the 'perfect' diamond. Clarity is not without its merits but it's the least important of the Four C's. SI2 or higher diamonds are classed as “eye-clean”.

What is diamond clarity and how it affects the value of a diamond.
Diamond clarity is just what it sounds like – it’s a qualitative metric that indicates how clear a diamond is. Diamond clarity is independent from the stone’s cut, shape, carat or other such grades and instead focuses on how transparent the stone is and whether the stone has any internal inclusions and blemishes.

The level of clarity in a diamond tells you how many internal and external flaws the stone has as well as how big and visible they are. Diamonds with fewer inclusions look cleaner, and light can pass unobstructed through such stones, making them sparkle. Diamonds that are heavily included, on the other hand, look dirty.

Before getting into the specifics of diamond color vs. clarity, it’s important to explain the basics of how color and clarity actually affect a diamond’s appearance. As we’ve covered in our diamond clarity guide, diamonds are graded for clarity on a scale that runs from IF (internally flawless) to I (included). The higher the grade, the clearer the diamond, with fewer inclusions and a cleaner, more perfect appearance.

Like most natural things, a diamond isn’t perfect. Clarity is a direct measure of the number of inherent imperfections the diamond has. These flaws can be things such as dark spots, feathery cracks, or white points in the diamond. A ‘flawless’ stone is extremely rare, and its rarity makes it very costly.

The beauty of a diamond is usually only affected by clarity if the clarity is low (like I clarity diamonds). If you buy an I clarity diamond (I1, I2, or I3) that has a lot of black spots (that look like pepper) in the stone, or if the stone is cracked, fractured, or cloudy, then sure, clarity will overpower beauty.

The carat weight affects the size of the diamond, and the cut affects how much it shines when it hits the light.
