How much does a one carat diamond cost? The short answer: A 1.00 carat diamond can range in price from about $1,000 to over $12,000. Not very helpful, right? But the truth is, one carat diamonds range so much in quality that diamond sellers (like us) can’t just slap one price tag on all of them.

You can find a 1-carat diamond ring anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 range, depending on the gem’s 4C attributes and other factors. You can save money if you decide to pick a nearly colorless diamond with VS1 or S1 clarity. Always keep in mind that the local jewelers and the online stores have lower prices than the brand name retail stores.

White Pine Diamonds and Worthy offered us $1,000 (22% of the ring’s retail price) and $1,200 (27% of its retail price, after Worthy’s commission was deducted), respectively. In short, the best offer we received for a $4,500 ring was $1,850 — just over 40% of the amount it cost at retail.

Rule of thumb: A 1-carat diamond can cost as low as $2,000 and as high as $25,000. That means a middle-of-the-range diamond should be $11,000 – $12,000. Sounds simple, but that is overpaying. A good value, good quality 1 carat diamond should cost you around $4,500 – $6,000.

In the diamond industry, diamonds are valued per carat based on their qualities. The price-per-carat increases with bigger and rarer diamonds. For example, a 0.5-carat diamond may cost $2,500 per carat. So the total cost of the diamond will be $1,250 (0.5 x $2,500).

Well, for starters, you don’t have to pay £14,000+ for a quality 1-carat diamond! Go a little lower, or a bit higher than exactly one carat and you'll save yourself a bit of dosh! Absolutely Colourless is nice if you can get it, but an ‘F’ or ‘G’ colour-grade diamond will look colourless to the unaided eye and will knock several grand off the price (anything ‘H’ or higher is perfectly lovely).
