A diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth, but if it is placed in an oven and the temperature is raised to about 763º Celsius (1405º Fahrenheit), it will simply vanish, without even ash remaining. Only a little carbon dioxide will have been released.

Yes, diamonds burn. There are many substantiated insurance claims of diamonds being destroyed in fires. So, technically, if you have a non-nitrogenated, flawless, pure-white diamond, you can turn it into CO2 with the application of heat. Can heat damage a diamond? Another type of injury that happens to diamonds is excessive heating, as in fire […]

Can diamonds crack under heat? A fake diamond made from glass or cubic zirconia will crack or shatter when exposed to a sudden temperature change. On the other hand, a diamond does not react when placed under high heat or when subjected to extreme temperature changes. Don’t worry, if it’s real, it’ll be completely fine.

The temperature of diamond ignition in pure oxygen is 690º C to 840 º C. In a stream of oxygen gas, diamonds burn initially at a low red heat. They will gradually rise in temperature and reach a white heat. Then, the diamonds will burn uninterruptedly with a pale-blue flame, even after the removal of the oxygen heat source.

What happens when diamonds are heated? The pure carbon of a diamond interacts with oxygen in the air and disappears to form carbon dioxide. If you heat a diamond to about 763° Celsius (1405° Fahrenheit), it will turn to vapor. At normal temperatures and normal pressure, a diamond is hard as a rock.

Can a Diamond Withstand Heat? Yes, they definitely can! As you probably already know, diamonds aren’t just used as gemstones for decorative purposes, but also as a tool in manufacturing various things. That alone should answer your question; if a diamond can be used in industrial manufacturing, you can be sure that it can withstand some heat.

Destroying a diamond is relatively easy, it will burn in an oxygen atmosphere with no trouble. It can be crushed as many poor quality stones are, to produce polishing powder. As far as a "diamond is forever" this is not true because diamond is the high pressure/high temperature form of carbon and it will (given enough time) revert to the normal pressure variety which is graphite.

Diamonds are very stable, but can also break when exposed to extreme temperature changes. "Thermal shock" is the term that describes the damage that can occur from extreme temp changes. Some gems are vulnerable to humidity changes. Opals can lose their moisture in dry conditions and crack. Some gems can absorb water---malachite, amber and azurite.

Here is How to Tell if a Diamond is Real or Fake 1) Water Test. Use this simple test to ensure a diamond is real. Find a normal sized drinking glass and fill it ¾ of the way with water. Carefully drop the loose stone into the glass. If the gemstone sinks, it’s a real diamond.
🔰
For the fog test, hold the diamond or ring between two fingers and breath on it with a puff of air. A light fog will form on the diamond because of the moisture and heat in your breath. If the fog dissipates right away, the diamond is real. If it takes several seconds for the fog to disperse, it is likely a fake diamond.
