Over the last ten years, diamonds with these natural color components comprised less than 0.4% of all diamonds submitted to GIA's laboratories worldwide (including both fancy-color and those on the D–Z scale). Pure hues of green, blue, or red are even rarer, accounting for less than 0.07% of all diamonds examined.

Natural-color green diamonds are very rare. Of all diamonds cut into polished gems in any given year, a very small number of them will have a dominant green color. Diamonds with a natural green color are rare enough that many people have never seen one, and those who have seen one are likely to have seen it in a museum exhibit.

This phenomenon happens incredibly rarely and natural green diamonds are very difficult to discover in diamond mines. Occasionally, a diamond of a different color will have a green overtone, such as a blue-green diamond or a yellow-green diamond. However, pure green diamonds hardly ever occur, and those of Fancy Vivid Green are the rarest of all.

Green diamonds are considered one of the rarer colors within the Fancy Diamond world. In fact, the only colors that are more difficult to find are red, pink, blue, violet and orange. Because of green’s extreme rarity, these diamonds are often far pricier than other colored diamonds.

Fancy Vivid green diamond is the rarest and most intense one, but because the demand for blue, red, and pink diamonds is higher, its price per carat is relatively lower. Besides that, the other green hues have never been abundant, and included mainly diamonds graded Fancy or Intense and below.

Colored diamonds have a special allure, and rare natural color green diamonds may be the most intriguing of them all. The green color in a diamond is the result of exposure to radiation. The source of the radiation can be naturally occurring or performed in a laboratory.

For the fog test, hold the diamond or ring between two fingers and breath on it with a puff of air. A light fog will form on the diamond because of the moisture and heat in your breath. If the fog dissipates right away, the diamond is real. If it takes several seconds for the fog to disperse, it is likely a fake diamond.
