What is an FL diamond? An FL (flawless) clarity diamond shows no inclusions or blemishes even under 10x magnification. It's the highest clarity grade and the rarest type of diamond clarity. Flawless diamonds represent less than a half percent of all diamonds on the market.

A flawless (FL) diamond shows no inclusions at 10x, and they’re very rare—fewer than 1% of all diamonds receive an FL clarity rating. Flawless diamonds are incredibly rare, because most diamonds feature naturally occurring inclusions. IF and FL are the top tiers of clarity grade, each accounting for just six percent of diamond sales.

Flawless diamonds are defined as those with no visible inclusions or blemishes. Internally Flawless (IF) diamonds are those with visible blemishes--but no inclusions. Essentially, the difference between a Flawless diamond engagement ring and an Internally Flawless diamond ring is the presence of blemishes on the diamond's surface.

A Flawless diamond has the same clarity grade as an Internally Flawless Diamond. The only difference is in the polishing of the facets. Typically if a diamond only makes “IF” clarity grading, it means that polishing lines are visible on the exterior of the diamond, or the facet (s).

Flawless (FL) diamonds have no internal inclusions and no blemishes at all. They sit on pillows in museums! In fact, flawless (FL) diamonds are so rare that once set in a piece of jewelry, the stone loses its flawless grade. Because diamond experts assume setting a stone blemishes it, after setting, a flawless diamond becomes internally flawless.
