A good rule of thumb is to stay between 0.25 ctw and 1 ctw for an everyday pair of studs. Then, if you're shopping for a pair of diamond studs that you'll wear on special occasions, you may want to go a bit bigger and opt for diamonds that are over 1 ctw.

10 best stud diamond earrings [2018]: 1/10 carat weight - white diamond illusion set stud earrings
A very popular size seems to be diamonds in the range of 0.40 – 0.49 carats each, which when combined will have a total carat weight which is just under 1.00 carats, because diamonds in this weight category cost less than diamonds in the 0.50 – 0.69 carat range.

One carat total weight diamond stud earrings will feature two 0.50 carat diamonds. In a pair of round cut diamond studs, each 0.50 carat diamond would measure around 5 mm in diameter. This size of diamond stud is popular because it’s quite versatile.

Carat Weight: Diamond stud earrings are about making an unforgettable impression. If you can afford it, try to get diamonds 0.50 carat (ct) or larger (of course, you’ll need two). Remember, too, that you can save money with little loss of impact by choosing gems that are a few points below the magic sizes of 0.50 ct, 0.75 ct, 1.00 ct, etc.

The studs I wear most often are cz set in white gold, 1.5 ctw. The real diamonds earrings I have are .5 ctw. asschers, .75 ctw. princess, and 1.07 ctw. yellow radiant. I personally like the way the .75 ct each studs look the best, sizewise. If I were ever to buy larger real diamond studs, I would go up a bit and get a set of 2 ctw. minimum.

Carat weight refers to the size of the diamond. Carat weight is entirely up to you. Keep in mind that earrings are sold with their total weight listed. A pair of diamond earrings listed as 1 carat have 0.50 carats per earring.

If you intend to buy a 5 carat or 10 carat diamond for the earrings, then it would make sense to go to 6 prongs. If you are looking for quality at competitive prices, the companies I mentioned above are the places to shop at.

A 1 carat diamond equals 6.5 mm Important: earrings are sold with their total carat weight listed. Earrings listed as being 0.50 carats means each earring will weigh 0.25 carats. Not 0.50 carats per earring!

A half carat diamond weighs 100mg (milligrams) or one tenth of a gram. A half carat diamond weighs exactly half of a one carat diamond. Half carat diamonds are also referred to as ½ carat diamonds,.5 diamonds, 0.5ct diamonds, or 50 point diamonds.

At 1.50 ctw, each earring is noticeably large and can have a ton of sparkle. Nearly 6 mm in diameter, these diamonds may look overly large on petite ears but provide the perfect earlobe coverage for larger ears. Again, in this weight range, it’s best to build earrings with laboratory-graded diamonds.
