Photo by Harold & Erica Van Pelt/ GIA If you've ever wondered why your diamond looks different in sunlight versus candlelight or daylight versus office lights, it's because the cut of your diamond responds differently depending on the light and the environment you are in.

If you’ve ever wondered why your diamond looks different in sunlight versus candlelight or daylight versus office lights, it’s because the cut of your diamond responds differently depending on the light and the environment you are in. How – and where – you look at your diamond can greatly change its appearance.

Why does my laboratory-grown diamond report look different to my natural diamond report? The new reports are digital-only, featuring an updated design and format to fully differentiate them from GIA’s reports for natural diamonds.

Diamond cut is often confused with shape, but they are very different. Diamond shape refers to the general silhouette or outline of the stone; diamond cut refers to its facet arrangement. Of the 4Cs of diamond quality (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight), cut is the most complex and technically difficult “C” to assess.

And the diamond does look truly spectacular in practically every other lighting situation, it even sparkles under fluorescent lighting, and I’m told that’s not supposed to happen. The thing is that I’m really not sure what is going on, because my best friend’s diamond goes dark in sunlight also, and it’s not cut nearly as well.

Fluorescence can be good or bad: it can improve a diamond’s color or make the diamond look hazy. When diamonds have Slight or Faint Blue Fluorescence, for example, they don’t appear cloudy. In fact, the slight fluorescence can make the diamond appear more white. But when fluorescence makes the diamond hazy, the stone is less transparent.

Fluorescence is when a diamond shows a soft glow under ultraviolet (UV) light. This is caused by certain minerals in the diamond. This effect is totally natural, appearing in a third of all diamonds. Most diamonds with fluorescence will glow blue.

A diamond that's less than a carat doesn't have to feel (or look!) small, says Landau. It all comes down to choosing a shape that magnifies the rock, whatever its size. "If you only have the budget to purchase less than a carat, go for a round or oval cut," she explains.

Here again is the same stone but in totally different lighting which emphasizes beautifully the metric of brightness. In this view you can see the arrow shafts (which appear black) however the rest of the diamond is extremely bright. This particular H&A diamond is cut with 77-78% lower girdles.
